The Senate has summoned President Bola Tinubu’s economic team to address concerns regarding the falling naira and the country’s dwindling economy.
The upper chamber had initially summoned the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Dr. Olayemi Cardoso, for a hearing on the same issues.
On Tuesday, the Senate revised its summons, stating that both the CBN governor and the economic team, which includes Minister of Finance Olawale Edun, Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning Atiku Bagudu, FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji, and NCS Comptroller General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, among others, would now appear on Friday at 9:00 am.
Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banks, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, explained the schedule adjustment.
Originally scheduled for Tuesday, the meeting with the CBN Governor was postponed due to Cardoso’s engagement at the House of Representatives.
Abiru stated that the Senate decided to be rational and considerate of the engagements of the CBN governor and the economic team.
”The decision was made to adjourn the meeting until Friday, considering the session’s importance and the need for adequate interaction with the economic team.
”The Senate aims to address issues related to the falling naira and the country’s overall economic challenges during the upcoming hearing,” Senator Abiru said.
