Former Governor of Niger and current Senator representing Niger North Senatorial District, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, has formally requested the suspension of his pension and allowances from the Government of Niger State during his tenure as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Senator Sani Bello, who served as the Executive Governor of Niger State from 2015 to 2023, made the request through a letter addressed to the Niger State Government.
In the letter, he expressed his belief that receiving both pension and allowances as a Senator while being funded from the same source is ethically and morally improper.
Bello’s Media Adviser, Muawiyah Yusuf Muye, emphasized the senator made the decision based on a moral stance.
Muye stated that Senator Sani Bello’s actions underscore his commitment to transparent and responsible governance and his belief that public officials should be held to the highest ethical standards.
Reacting to the action of the former governor, a public affairs commentator, Danjuma Saleh said:
”Senator Abubakar Sani Bello’s actions may set a positive example for other public officials and leaders, emphasizing the importance of accountability and responsible management of public resources.
”His move promotes transparency and fairness in government compensation and benefits.”
