La Liga has officially called off plans to stage the Villarreal vs Barcelona fixture in Miami, dealing a major blow to efforts aimed at expanding Spanish football’s footprint in the United States.

The high-profile match was initially slated to take place in January 2026 as part of La Liga’s international expansion drive, which sought to bring competitive league games to fans outside Spain.

However, according to league sources, the decision to cancel came after logistical challenges, scheduling conflicts, and opposition from both players’ unions and FIFA, which continues to resist staging official league matches abroad.

This is the second time La Liga’s attempt to host a regular-season match in the U.S. has fallen through, after a similar plan involving Barcelona and Girona was blocked in 2018.

League officials have reiterated their commitment to international growth but admitted that “the right framework and agreements” must be in place before such ventures can proceed.

La Liga’s decision to cancel the Villarreal vs Barcelona match in Miami underscores the complex realities of global football expansion — balancing commercial ambition with regulatory and player opposition.

The league’s long-term goal has been clear: to rival the Premier League’s global reach by taking Spanish football closer to international fans, especially in North America, a lucrative and fast-growing market. But with this latest setback, La Liga’s U.S. push once again hits turbulence.

FIFA and players’ unions have consistently argued that domestic league games should remain on home soil, citing player welfare, fan fairness, and sporting integrity. This makes it increasingly difficult for La Liga to replicate the Premier League’s model of global dominance through physical presence.
