Liverpool manager Arne Slot has played down speculation about potential January transfer activity, insisting that signing a centre-back during the winter window is far from his priorities.
When asked about the possibility of strengthening his defensive options in January, Slot appeared caught off guard by the question.
“This was one of the questions I didn’t expect, talking about signings in the winter break,” the Dutch manager said in Friday’s pre-match conference. “I think there are so many games to be played before that, and in the position we are in, it’s the last thing that’s on my mind.”
While acknowledging that sporting director Richard Hughes may be considering future recruitment, Slot made clear where his focus lies. “Maybe not on Richard Hughes’, but it’s the last thing on my mind. It’s not a topic at all for me at the moment,” he stated.
The Liverpool boss expressed confidence in his current defensive options, highlighting the depth available to him at centre-back. “We have at this moment three centre-backs – with Joe Gomez included, of course – and maybe Ryan [Gravenberch] and Wata [Endo] who can play in that position,” Slot explained.
In a revealing moment, Slot suggested that other areas of the squad may require more immediate attention. “Maybe you are not aware of it yet, but we have other positions at the moment which are a bit more of an issue,” he said, hinting that any potential transfer business could focus elsewhere.
News.ng reports that while Liverpool is navigating a busy fixture schedule, Slot’s comments suggest the club will concentrate on managing its current resources rather than looking to the transfer market for immediate reinforcements.
Liverpool, who are eighth on the log, will host Nottingham Forest on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. (WAT). The Reds have come under strong criticism after three consecutive defeats in October.
