FIFA may soon officially sanction South Africa’s national team by deducting three points from their tally after it was confirmed that Bafana Bafana fielded an ineligible player in a recent competitive fixture. The ruling was announced on Thursday following a disciplinary review by football’s governing body.

According to FIFA, South Africa breached player eligibility regulations during their qualifying campaign by fielding Teboho Mokoena, who had already received two yellow cards. Such an infraction automatically results in the forfeiture of points under international competition rules.

The punishment comes as a huge blow to Bafana Bafana, who are currently battling for qualification in both the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Losing three points could significantly derail their hopes, potentially dropping them further down their qualification group and giving rivals a crucial advantage.

In its notice, FIFA reiterated its commitment to enforcing strict compliance with eligibility rules, stating: “The integrity of international competitions depends on fair play and adherence to regulations. Fielding an ineligible player undermines this principle, and sanctions are necessary to protect the game.”

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has yet to issue an official response, though it is expected to file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). However, analysts warn that overturning FIFA’s ruling will be extremely difficult, as the regulations on player eligibility are clear and binding.
