Trading activities across key African stock exchanges closed on a mixed and generally subdued note at the end of Wednesday’s trading session, with most markets recording declines in volume and turnover amid cautious investor sentiment.

On the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE), investors traded a total of 2,175,865 shares valued at GHS 3.064 million. This represented a 42 per cent decline in trading volume compared with the previous session on Tuesday, December 2, according to data available to News.ng.

However, market turnover improved by 6 per cent, indicating continued interest in higher-value equities. The market capitalisation of the GSE currently stands at GHS 166 billion, reflecting the exchange’s overall valuation.

Similarly, activity on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) showed a notable slowdown. A total of 274.26 million shares were exchanged in 351,198 deals, with a combined value of ZAR 22.9 billion. Compared with the previous trading session on Monday, December 1, the market recorded a 28 per cent decline in volume, a 31 per cent drop in turnover, and a 5 per cent fall in the number of deals, pointing to reduced market participation. Despite the slowdown, the JSE maintained a strong market capitalisation of ZAR 22.7 trillion.

At the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), trading activity also weakened significantly. The market recorded 9.35 million shares traded in 4,913 deals, with a total turnover of KES 168.9 million. This represented a sharp 77 per cent decline in trading volume and an 81 per cent drop in turnover compared with the previous trading day on Tuesday, December 2. However, the number of deals improved by 6 per cent, suggesting sustained interest among retail and institutional investors. The NSE’s market capitalisation currently stands at KES 2.82 trillion.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NGX) posted mixed performance indicators. A total of 403.78 million shares were traded in 21,500 deals, valued at NGN 15.41 billion. This represented a 33 per cent decline in trading volume and a 10 per cent drop in turnover from the previous trading session on Tuesday, December 2.

Notably, however, the number of deals jumped by 45 per cent, signalling increased participation across smaller transactions. The NGX’s market capitalisation remains strong at NGN 93.5 trillion.

Overall, the latest session across Africa’s leading stock markets reflected reduced trading momentum, with isolated improvements in deal counts and turnover suggesting that investors remain cautious but selectively active in key equities.
