Confluent, a streaming data and Kafka specialist announced on Monday the acquisition of WarpStream, a streaming data solution that is Kafka-compatible.

Confluent intends to employ WarpStream’s cloud-native solution to expand its portfolio by creating a new service (Confluent WarpStream) that will sit between its fully managed Confluent Cloud and self-managed Confluent Platform.

Jay Kreps, co-founder and CEO, of Confluent, confirmed the acquisition in a press release.

WarpStream’s Bring Your Own Cloud (“BYOC”) data streaming architecture claims it is intended for organisations running large-scale workloads with low latency needs in their own cloud environment, making it ideal for logging, observability, and feeding data lakes.

Newsng understands that Confluent can now offer fully managed (Confluent Cloud), self-managed (Confluent Platform), and now BYOC (with WarpStream) data streaming solutions to meet all of its customers’ needs.

“There’s definitely a set of people who want some self-managed piece of software. They’re going to go around themselves,” the CEO explained.

“And there’s a set of people who want a fully managed cloud. But in some of these organizations, there’s a set of use cases that either have requirements around the data in their environment not being able to leave or just need a fair amount of customization that leaves them doing everything themselves, which is not ideal.”

Under the shared responsibility model used by BYOC, both the vendor and the consumer are accountable for the system’s upkeep and functionality.

Customers benefit from greater deployment flexibility because of this shared responsibility, although at the expense of some operational overhead.

This strategy is advantageous in situations where a customer is unable to use a fully managed service due to contractual or regulatory restrictions.

Confluent’s product range now includes a cloud solution for customers with high-scale applications that have loose latency requirements, such logging, observability, and feeding data lakes, thanks to WarpStream’s next-generation BYOC.
