Maduka Okoye, a goalkeeper for the Super Eagles and Udinese, has been suspended for two months by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for engaging in unlawful betting.
Following an inquiry into questionable betting practices connected to a 2023–2024 Serie A match, the decision to ban Maduka Okoye for two months was made public on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
The dispute started on March 11, 2024, when Udinese and Lazio played in Serie A. When his team was ahead 2-1 in the 64th minute of this game, Okoye was given a yellow card for wasting time.
When concerned authorities noticed an extraordinary spike in wagers, especially on the goalkeeper getting a yellow card, they flagged the occurrence.
More than €120,000 is alleged by authorities to have been won from these bets, which were apparently at 8/1 odds and mostly came from bets in the Udine region.
Okoye and three associates were under investigation after the questionable conduct, and in June 2025, the matter was presented to Italy’s disciplinary authority.
Despite early concerns that the 25-year-old might receive a much more severe four-year sentence for match-fixing or sporting fraud, the disciplinary panel decided to issue a lesser conviction based on unlawful betting.
Since then, Udinese has issued a statement reaffirming their unwavering support for Okoye and expressing their joy that the player was exonerated of the more serious charges of sporting fraud.
