To improve connections for residents in rural and underserved areas of the nation, Telecom company, T-Mobile, announced that it will acquire nearly all of the U.S. Cellular’s wireless firm in a $4.4 billion in cash and assumed debt.
T-Mobile will purchase the wireless operations, customers, stores, and specific spectrum assets of U.S. Cellular as part of the deal, which was disclosed in a news statement seen by Newsng on Wednesday.
According to TMo, UScellular users will also be able to “fully participate” in the Un-carrier’s “industry-leading value-packed plans filled with benefits and perks”.
UScellular subscribers will benefit from a “superior connectivity experience” and complete access to T-Mobile’s “largest and fastest 5G network” in the nation following the acquisition’s closing in mid-2025.
This according to experts will eliminate the requirement for roaming while travelling outside of the UScellular coverage region.
“As customers from both companies will get more coverage and more capacity from our combined footprint, our competitors will be forced to keep up – and even more consumers will benefit,” said T-Mobile’s CEO, Mike Sievert, in a statement.
Reacting to the acquisition, Laurent Therivel, CEO of UScellular, said:
T-Mobile’s purchase and integration of UScellular’s wireless operations will provide best-in-class connectivity to rural Americans through enhanced nationwide coverage and service offerings at more compelling price points.
“The transaction provides our customers access to better coverage and speeds, as well as unlimited texting in more than 215 countries, content offers, device upgrades and other T-Mobile benefits.
T-Mobile plans to finance the acquisition with a mix of cash and up to $2 billion in debt, which will include an exchange offer to select US Cellular debtholders.
Despite the sizeable transaction, T-Mobile doesn’t expect it to have a substantial impact on its balance sheet this year.
