Hours after directing vice-chancellors to reopen public universities, the Federal Government reversed the circular issued to that effect.

The said circular was issued by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and made public on Monday, September 26.

The circular had ordered the resumption of routine activities across all campuses despite the lingering crisis embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on February 14.

As mixed reactions began to trail the order, the NUC issued another circular recanting its previous decision.

“I have been directed to withdraw the NUC Circular Ref: NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/135, and dated September 23, 2022, on the above,” the new circular signed by the director of finance and accounts, Sam Onazi, reads.

“Consequently, the said circular stands withdrawn. All pro-chancellors and chairmen of governing councils, as well as vice-chancellors of federal universities, are to please note.

“Further development and information would be communicated to all relevant stakeholders. Please, accept the assurances of the Executive Secretary’s warmest regards,” it adds.

No reason was given for the reversal.

Meanwhile, ASUU has said that it would appeal the order by the National Industrial Court restraining the union from continuing the ongoing strike action.
