President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has congratulated Liberia for the smooth and successful conduct of the recent presidential election.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu hailed the Liberian government and its people for orchestrating a peaceful and credible election process.
The Nigerian President congratulated President-elect Joseph Boakai, acknowledging the people’s mandate and urging him to foster unity and leverage the widespread support demonstrated through the ballot box to deliver effective governance to Liberia.
Commending outgoing President George Weah for his statesmanship, President Tinubu lauded Weah’s decision to concede the election, effectively averting any potential socio-political crisis.
“I commend President George Weah for his sterling example, undiluted patriotism, and statesmanship. He has defied the stereotype that peaceful transitions of power are untenable in West Africa.
“He has demonstrated that the outcome of elections in the sub-region need not become the propellant of violence and unrest and that the will of the people must always be respected,” Tinubu stated.
He emphasized the significance of Weah’s concession in upholding democratic principles, especially at a time when democracy faces threats from elements seeking to undermine the people’s will.
President Tinubu praised Weah’s exceptional display of democratic sportsmanship, characterizing it as an exemplary act of undiluted patriotism and statesmanship.
He highlighted Weah’s role in defying the belief that peaceful power transitions are unachievable in West Africa. Tinubu emphasized that Weah’s actions showcased that electoral outcomes need not incite violence or unrest, underscoring the paramount importance of respecting the people’s will.
Expressing gratitude to the Liberian citizens for their peaceful participation in the electoral process, President Tinubu urged them to steadfastly promote peace and democracy in the country.
