President Tinubu has approved a one-year extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
The move is aimed at allowing Adeniyi to continue spearheading ongoing reform efforts within the agency.
This was announced in a statement issued on July 31, 2025, by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
According to the statement, “The Presidency announces that the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, which is due to expire on August 31, 2025, has been extended by one year.”
The Customs boss is expected to consolidate progress in key areas, including:
The digital modernisation of customs operations.
The roll-out of the National Single Window Project, and
The execution of Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework.
Onanuga highlighted the President’s appreciation for Adeniyi’s “steadfast leadership and commitment to service.” The statement further noted that President Tinubu is confident the tenure extension will enhance the Customs Service’s roles in trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.
Adeniyi’s initial confirmation came in October 2023, following months of acting in the position. As stated by Willie Bassey, Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, “The appointment takes effect from 19th October, 2023, and his tenure is in accordance with the extant provisions of the Public Service Rules (PSR).”
