Arsenal Football Club survived a late defeat by securing a 1–1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 on Wednesday night at the BayArena, news.ng reports.
Arsenal were favourites to win the match, but the case was the reverse at the end of 90 minutes as the hosts came prepared, knowing the Premier League club’s domineering form both domestically and internationally.
The first half ended in a barren draw until the 46th minute of the second half, when the German side found the back of the net courtesy of Robert Andrich to make it 1–0.
The Gunners struggled to find a leveller for more than 40 minutes until luck came their way when Arsenal were awarded a penalty after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, with Kai Havertz scoring from the spot to level the match at 1–1.
Both teams now have the same advantage as they prepare for the second leg next Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
