The Department of Criminology and Security Studies at the University of Ilorin (Unilorin) has launched a new initiative to equip its students with essential skills in self-defence and combat training.
This development was announced by Dr Adedeji Oyenuga, a Visiting Scholar from the Lagos State University (LASU), during the maiden edition of the training at the university’s sports complex on Monday.
Dr. Oyenuga explained that although the training could not be immediately integrated into the formal curriculum due to timing issues, the university has recognized its importance.
“As a result, the training will initially be offered as a vocational activity, with plans to incorporate it into the curriculum in the future.
“I commend the university for thinking outside the box and swiftly approving the idea of practical combat training,” Dr. Oyenuga stated.
He highlighted the significance of self-defence within the context of security studies, noting that the initiative reflects Unilorin’s commitment to producing graduates who are not only academically proficient but also capable of ensuring their safety and the security of others.
“This innovative approach aligns with the evolving landscape of Criminology and Security Studies, which increasingly demands a comprehensive understanding of practical self-defence techniques,” Dr Oyenuga added.
Dr Oyenuga emphasized that this move by Unilorin demonstrates a forward-thinking strategy aimed at enhancing the practical skills of its students in line with contemporary security challenges.
Meanwhile, Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, Kumbotso, Kano State, has announced its commitment to addressing the challenge of out-of-school children as part of its broader mission to enhance educational development in Nigeria.
The university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Yahaya Bunkure, outlined the university’s strategy to tackle the problem through a combination of community outreach, research initiatives, and the development of effective educational interventions.
“The upgrade of our institution to a University of Education marks a significant step forward in advancing teacher education, research, and overall educational quality in Kano State and Nigeria at large,” Prof. Bunkure stated.
