California-based Azra Games has successfully secured $42.7 million in funding to develop its next-generation mobile role-playing game (RPG).
The Series A funding round was led by venture firm Pantera Capital, with key participation from a16z Crypto, a16z GAMES, and NFX.
This latest round brings Azra Games’ total funding to $68.3 million.
Founded by veteran game designer Mark Otero, the company aims to revolutionize mobile RPGs. Otero, well-known for creating successful titles like Superhero City and Age of Champions through his former company KlickNation, previously sold the studio to Electronic Arts for $35 million in 2011.
His new venture is taking the RPG genre further with blockchain-based mechanics and artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline game development.
Azra’s upcoming free-to-play RPG game, designed for mobile platforms, promises to introduce what Otero calls the “fourth generation of RPGs” to Western audiences.
Backed by Otero’s vast industry experience and a strong tech research team led by co-founder and CTO Travis Boudreaux, the studio is diving into AI to enhance the development process and produce AAA-level content.
The recent funding boost comes at a time when venture capital is flowing back into the gaming sector after a slowdown, especially for studios experimenting with Web3 and blockchain technologies.
A16z, one of Azra’s backers, has committed significant resources to support gaming startups working with AI, VR/AR, and blockchain.
