Nigeria’s Super Falcons are getting ready to play Zambia’s Copper Queens in a much-anticipated quarterfinal match at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which is being held in Morocco.
The forthcoming encounter between the Super Falcons of Nigeria and their Zambian opponents is expected to be an exciting contest between two of the continent’s top teams.
Nigeria, the nine-time African champions, won Group B with a commanding seven points, guaranteeing their place in the quarterfinals. They did not allow a goal during their group stage run, demonstrating a strong defensive performance.
The Copper Queens of Zambia also showed their strength, placing second in Group A with seven points, tied with the hosts, Morocco, but trailing on goal differential.
Speaking ahead of the game, coach of the Super Falcons, Justin Madugu, said that he is looking forward to the game against the Zambians and will find a way to stop their two fearsome forwards, Rachel Kundananji and captain Barbra Banda, who have already scored three goals each in the tournament.
“We have our strategy. We’ve studied them closely. We know what they’re capable of,” Madugu told a press conference.
“We’re not too concerned about individual brilliance; it’s a team game. We’ll work on neutralising their strengths.”
A replay of the 2022 WAFCON bronze medal playoff, which Zambia won in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw, is taking place between Nigeria and Zambia in the quarterfinals. This makes the forthcoming fixture even more intriguing.
