Nigeria’s Super Falcons and tournament hosts Morocco won their respective semi-final matches on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, setting the stage for an exciting final at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
In a thrilling match at Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, Nigeria’s Super Falcons defeated defending champions South Africa 2-1 following a fierce battle to guarantee their place in the final.
Rasheedat Ajibade’s penalty kick in the 45th minute gave the Super Falcons the lead just before halftime. In the 60th minute, Linda Motlhalo of South Africa equalised from the penalty spot.
But deep into stoppage time (90+4′), Michelle Alozie gave Nigeria a thrilling victory, guaranteeing their spot in the final and exacting revenge for their defeat by Banyana Banyana in 2022.
Morocco advanced to their second consecutive WAFCON final by defeating Ghana in a close penalty shootout in the other keenly contested semi-final.
The game concluded 1-1 in extra time at Rabat’s Stade Moulay Abdellah. In the 26th minute, Stella Nyamekye of Ghana took the lead, but Sakina Ouzraoui of Morocco tied the score in the 55th minute.
When there were no more goals in regulation or extra time to separate both teams, the match went to penalties, where the hosts, Morocco, prevailed 4–2 over the Ghanaians.
These wins imply that the nine-time winners, Nigeria’s Super Falcons, will face the host country, Morocco, in the much-awaited WAFCON 2024 final. The match will conclude on Saturday, July 26, 2025.
