Mrs Didi Esther Walson-Jack, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), has emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among Federal Permanent Secretaries to accelerate the implementation of the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan 2021-2025 (FCSSIP-25).
Speaking at the inaugural retreat for Federal Permanent Secretaries held from September 5th to 7th, 2024, in Zuba, Niger State, she stressed that the FCSSIP-25 is a strategic roadmap aimed at shaping a more efficient, accountable, and citizen-focused public service.
The retreat, themed “Accelerating Public Service Reforms Towards Effective Service Delivery,” focused on enhancing the role of Permanent Secretaries in bridging policy formulation and execution.
In her keynote address, Mrs Walson-Jack urged the Permanent Secretaries to align their operations with the objectives of FCSSIP-25 to ensure effective implementation and uphold good governance principles.
“You are the anchors that uphold our governance principles within the MDAs. The trust Nigerians have placed in you reflects your commitment and responsibility,” she stated.
Commending the Permanent Secretaries for their dedication, Mrs Walson-Jack encouraged them to see themselves as custodians of institutional knowledge tasked with serving Nigerians with integrity and impartiality.
She reaffirmed her commitment to providing the necessary guidance, resources, and solutions to ensure the civil service meets its goals.
“Together, we will navigate difficulties and find solutions that serve our country’s best interests. You can count on my unwavering support,” she assured.
Additionally, Mrs. Walson-Jack emphasized the importance of embracing the core values of Accountability, Meritocracy, Professionalism, Loyalty, and Efficiency as the foundation of their leadership.
She called for a cultural shift within the civil service toward transparency, efficiency, and accountability, stating that these values are essential for building a stronger civil service and restoring public confidence.
Meanwhile, the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), led by Prof Tunji Olaopa, has announced plans to revolutionize its recruitment and promotion processes by introducing an online recruitment portal and computer-based tests.
The initiative is part of the FCSC’s broader goal to modernize and reform the Nigerian civil service, ensuring it remains competitive and efficient in the digital age.
Speaking at the maiden edition of the commission’s Monthly Seminal Series, Prof Olaopa emphasized the need to address longstanding challenges within the civil service and enhance its professionalism through updated recruitment and promotion practices.
