Former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has identified the reasons why the club were unable to beat Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.
News.ng reports that Chelsea were defeated 3–0 by City in matchday 32 of the English Premier League.
According to match statistics provided by Google, City dominated all of the key performance indicators during the match.
In terms of ball possession, it was 35%–65% in favour of City, as they were more accurate in their passes, with an 86%–93% success rate.
Also, Chelsea fell short in the number of passes completed, recording 380 compared to City’s 622. The Blues were completely outplayed and managed to complete only 328 accurate passes, as against City’s 579.
Meanwhile, speaking shortly after the match, Lampard, who is the current manager of Coventry City Football Club, noted that Chelsea left a lot of space for City to move around. He added that a player like Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes would take advantage of such space, while admitting that the London club lacked that personality in the squad.
He said, “If you watched the game properly, Man City left a lot of space between the lines. A player like Bruno would punish that with his passing. Chelsea doesn’t have that profile.”
He urged the club to learn from Man United’s interim manager, Michael Carrick, and Fernandes, as both teams face each other next weekend, Saturday, April 18, 2026.
“Their next match against Man United, maybe the coach can learn one or two from Carrick’s tactics and how it’s being done by Fernandes,” he added.
Chelsea are currently sixth on the log with 48 points, while City are second with 64 points.
