Google announced that it has invested in Taiwan’s New Green Power and has the option to purchase up to 300 megawatts of renewable energy from the company, which is controlled by the BlackRock fund, to reduce its own and its suppliers’ carbon emissions.

Amanda Peterson Corio, global head of data centre energy at Google, disclosed the investment plans in a blog post.

As part of the agreement, Google will invest funds in Taiwanese solar developer New Green Power, subject to regulatory approval, “to facilitate the buildout of its large-scale solar pipeline.”

Investors are pressuring businesses to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with their operations and value chains, and big tech companies have set some of the most aggressive goals.

Google wants all of its locations to run entirely on carbon-free electricity. However, emissions have increased due to the sector’s development in demand for data processing capacity to support artificial intelligence.

If permitted, News gathered that Google’s investment in NGP will directly finance new solar projects.

The corporation intends to significantly lessen its carbon footprint by acquiring up to 300 MW of clean energy. To further assist them in achieving their sustainability objectives, they may even provide their Taiwanese semiconductor suppliers with access to clean energy.

“We’re aiming to reach net-zero emissions across our operations and value chain, supported by a goal to run on 24/7 carbon-free energy everywhere we operate.

“The path to reach these goals is challenging and requires both commercial efforts and broader energy systems change. We’re excited to partner with BlackRock and New Green Power to advance the build-out of clean energy on Taiwan’s electricity grid,” Peterson said.

This programme expands on Google and BlackRock’s long-standing partnership to promote the use of clean energy across the Asia Pacific.

Their joint efforts have had a significant impact on the development of laws allowing businesses to purchase renewable energy directly.

Ross Mackey, Portfolio Manager, Climate Infrastructure, BlackRock said: “BlackRock’s Climate Infrastructure business is a leading investor in Taiwan’s solar industry and we are delighted to partner with Google to provide a scalable and sustainable energy solution for their operations in Taiwan.”

The partnership follows a similar Google partnership with NV Energy to harness geothermal energy to build more environmentally friendly data centres.
