The Presidential Elections Petitions Tribunal in Abuja dismissed on Wednesday the petition of Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi requesting to disqualify the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Tinubu for not receiving 25 per cent of the votes cast in the FCT.
According to Justice Haruna Tsammani, the head judge of the five-man panel of the tribulation court, the FCT does not have a special status in that Nigerians living there are not superior to citizens from other states.
The judge, therefore, stated that Mr Tinubu’s election victory cannot be annulled just because he did not receive 25 per cent of the vote in the federal capital.
He also declared Mr Obi’s petition as irrelevant.
In their lawsuits disputing Mr Tinubu’s victory, Mr Obi and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party stated that the president did not receive 25 per cent of legal votes in Abuja.
Mr Tinubu received 19 per cent of valid votes in the FCT.
