Vodafone and Meta have partnered to enhance the distribution of short-form video throughout 11 of Vodafone’s European mobile networks, to better handle the rapidly increasing demand for video content.
Gaya Nagarajan, Vice-President of Network Engineering at Meta, confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday.
While Meta claimed to have improved the efficiency and optimisation of its infrastructure deployment and video engineering tools, Vodafone also claimed to have freed up network space at popular 4G and 5G sites in crowded areas like transit hubs and shopping malls.
Newsng understands that partnerships such as Vodafone’s and Meta’s can benefit telecom carriers and Internet businesses alike.
Although network upgrades are Vodafone’s responsibility, Meta’s optimisation work may establish a precedent for more efficient resource management.
Investors ought to be on the lookout for more partnerships such as these that have the potential to increase network efficiency and reduce the financial pressures on telecom corporations.
Alberto Ripepi, Chief Network Officer at Vodafone, commented: “Meta’s willingness to optimise the delivery of video for its applications leads the way for a more efficient use of existing network resources. Vodafone and Meta have implemented these optimisations across Vodafone’s European markets and intend to continue collaborating to foster additional efficiencies.”
As per the report, the firms observed a significant decrease in network traffic for Meta applications over Vodafone’s mobile network during the first three weeks of the test, which was carried out in the UK in April.
To benefit all of its mobile customers at these crowded places—like shopping malls and transportation hubs—Vodafone released more network resources on some of its most well-known 4G/5G sites.
“Our relationship with Vodafone is a long-term partnership, and collaboration on video optimisation is an opportunity to drive innovation and shape the future of the internet.
We are committed to continuing our collaboration with innovative partners like Vodafone, device manufacturers, equipment vendors and the wider digital ecosystem, to push the boundaries of video optimisation,” added Nagarajan.
We earlier reported that the National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) of Brazil has decided to immediately revoke Meta’s updated privacy policy on the use of individual user data for generative AI system training within the nation.
