Dr. Anka, the Health Commissioner for Zamfara, said that since the start of the cholera outbreak in December 2022, there have been 1188 cases in the state. Out of those, 40 people have died.
She also said that 50 cases have been diagnosed and two people have died. The cholera is mostly in Gusau, Anka, and Bakura, but it has also spread to some of the other local government areas in the state.
The Governor of Zamfara, Mr Lawan, has visited some patients at Anka General Hospital to assess their response to treatment, and now he’s coming to the clinic to check on them.
The commissioner added that an inquiry was underway to determine the scale of the outbreak.
The commissioner also commended the NCDP for setting up a state-level centre at the YYMSH Gusau.
According to the commissioner, communities should take steps to ensure the cleanliness of their surroundings and promote good personal hygiene practices.
The public should ensure they only consume clean water, Anka said, adding that this would help the state to contain further transmission.
