Meta announced today that it has now introduced its long-awaited Threads API, allowing developers to build experiences around it.
This would enable third-party developers to create new experiences around
Jesse Chen, director of engineering at Threads confirmed the launch in a statement on Tuesday.
Chen explained that the new API will enable developers to publish posts, fetch their material, and build reply management features. More particularly, developers will be able to allow users to hide/unhide or respond to individual replies, both of which have been popular features on the site.
In addition, users will be able to access analytics for data such as the number of views, likes, comments, reposts, and quotes at the media and account levels.
Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg also confirmed the news via a post on Threads.
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri made the first public reference to the company’s development of the Threads API in October 2023. The API was launched in a private beta with partners including Sprinklr, Sprout Social, Social News Desk, Hootsuite, tech news site Techmeme, and a few additional developers.
At the time, Chen stated that Meta intends to make the API publicly available to developers in June and has delivered on its promise.
“People can now publish posts via the API, fetch their own content, and leverage our reply management capabilities to set reply and quote controls, retrieve replies to their posts, hide, unhide or respond to specific replies,” explained Jesse Chen.
It remains to be seen what level of interest this latest announcement will generate, but Meta is well aware of the role developers play in creating a thriving ecosystem, especially since many people are still looking for a viable alternative to X, which appears to be deteriorating with each passing month.
We earlier reported that following a preliminary ruling from the Turkish Competition Commission, Meta Platforms said that it will temporarily halt its social media platform, Threads, in Turkey.
