Dr Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner in Nigeria, has affirmed his dedication to bolstering the ties between the United Kingdom and Nigeria, citing increased engagement in trade and security as critical priorities.
Speaking during an interview in Abuja to mark his first anniversary in Nigeria, Montgomery emphasized the significance of the enduring people-to-people connections between the two nations.
He highlighted the substantial Nigerian heritage in the UK and the sizable British population with dual nationality residing in Nigeria.
Reflecting on his inaugural year in office, Montgomery underscored the importance of acquainting the UK with Nigeria’s new administration following the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu.
He noted a pivotal moment during the visit of former UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, who engaged with President Tinubu and various stakeholders to explore avenues of cooperation.
”During Cleverly’s visit, both countries identified security, trade and investment, and collaborative efforts as focal points for mutual advancement,” he stated.
Montgomery emphasized the necessity for enhanced security cooperation and the imperative to bolster bilateral trade and investment.
The British envoy also called for regional cooperation, particularly in upholding democratic principles across Africa.
He lauded the professionalism and efficacy of the staff at the British High Commission, acknowledging their pivotal role in facilitating various initiatives spanning security, trade, migration, and development cooperation.
Highlighting key milestones achieved during his tenure, Montgomery cited the signing of detailed agreements in February, encompassing security and defence partnerships.
Additionally, he referenced the productive visit of Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Kemi Badenoch, aimed at fostering collaboration in sectors such as agriculture, creative industries, and education.
Expressing gratitude for the warm hospitality received during his travels across Nigeria, Montgomery acknowledged the contributions of governors, traditional leaders, businesspersons, and civil society in advancing bilateral relations.
”With a focus on security, trade, and regional cooperation, both countries are poised to deepen their partnership for mutual benefit and regional stability,” he added.

Rowe assumes her role following the four-year tenure of Mr Christopher Prycroft.
