Following the departure of Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro, reports indicate that Augustine Eguavoen, the Super Eagles’ technical director, has assumed the role of interim coach for the Nigerian national football team.
Peseiro, who guided the team to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), resigned as the head coach as his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation concluded on February 28, 2024.
While there were negotiations for a new contract between the NFF and Peseiro, the former Venezuela manager opted to step down.
Confirming his exit via a post on his social media account on March 1, 2024, Peseiro expressed gratitude for the opportunity to coach the Super Eagles and thanked the former NFF president for hiring him.
According to reports from SoccernetNg, Eguavoen, a 58-year-old former Super Eagles coach, will lead the team temporarily until the Nigeria Football Federation appoints a permanent successor.
Eguavoen previously served as the Super Eagles’ interim manager for the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon following Gernot Rohr’s departure, guiding Nigeria to the Round of 16 before being eliminated by Tunisia.
Notably, Eguavoen was the team’s technical director during Nigeria’s silver medal-winning campaign at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.
