Billionaire businessman, Elon Musk, revealed that long-form movies will soon be available on smart TVs through social network X.
This information comes after Fortune magazine said that X would soon release a TV app for Samsung and Amazon customers, with a launch date set for the following week.
The TV app appears “identical” to YouTube’s TV app, according to a person who spoke anonymously, suggesting that Musk intends the X app to rival the YouTube app, which is owned by Google.
After Musk revealed his plans to turn the platform into a super app with peer-to-peer payments and messaging features in October of last year, only a couple of users were granted access to an early version of video and voice calling.
“Coming soon,” Musk said in a brief response on X to a user’s posting that the platform’s long-form videos could be watched directly on smart TVs.
In a subsequent post, Musk stated that customers “can already use Apple AirPlay to play more videos from your phone to your TV.”
In an attempt to establish itself as a “video-first platform,” X has sought to collaborate with content producers. This is at a time when X is having difficulty keeping advertisers on the platform due to some problems that have occurred since the ownership group led by Musk acquired what was once known as Twitter in October 2022.
We earlier reported that four former Twitter executives, including ex-CEO Parag Agrawal, sued Musk alleging that they were owed over $128 million in severance payments.
In the case, Musk stated that these executives had engaged in “willful misconduct” and “gross negligence” in their letters of termination, but he was never able to provide proof to support his claims.
