President Bola Tinubu has attributed the inaccuracy of his certificate to the Chicago State University clerk.
Speaking through his lawyers Oluwole Afolabi and Christopher Carmichael, the president accused the university’s yet-to-be-named school clerk of making a mistake about the date it listed on his recently-issued certificate.
Mr Tinubu gave the disclaimer following Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), efforts to unearth President Tinubu’s academic records.
President Tinubu has stated that he obtained honours in Business Administration from Chicago State University in 1979, yet his educational history has been a source of contention.
In the past years, President Tinubu’s age, name and school has been a subject of controversy especially prior to the just concluded general elections with many from different quarters pointing out several inaccuracies, to “the appearance of differences.”
The News.ng reported last month how Mr Atiku refuted a false and misleading report that a United States court in Illinois County dismissed a lawsuit he filed against President Tinubu in which he sought the President’s academic records from Chicago State University.
Speaking before the judge hearing the case, Jeffery Gilbert of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago, Mr Tinubu said CSU issued a new diploma for him but incorrectly wrote the date of graduation as June 27, 1979.
He, therefore, said the correct date was June 22, 1979.
“The correct date was June 22, 1979, but that scrivener’s error – along with a change in the CSU logo, the font on the diploma, and leadership at CSU who signed the diploma created the appearance of differences between an earlier issued diploma and the one issued in response to the 2022 subpoena.”
