Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has voiced his concerns over the conduct of Local Government elections in various states, lamenting the trend of “coronation” of ruling party candidates instead of proper electoral processes.
During a meeting with executive members of the Forum of State Independent Electoral Commission (FOSIECOM) in Abuja, Yakubu emphasized the importance of maintaining independence and credibility in local elections.
He acknowledged the shared responsibility between INEC and FOSIECOM in conducting elections and highlighted the challenges faced by State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs).
Yakubu expressed disappointment over the lack of functional offices, resources, and independence of many SIECs, which he said has compromised their ability to conduct free, fair, and transparent elections.
He urged state governors to ”allow SIECs greater autonomy and capacity for independent action.”
He stressed that INEC’s support for SIECs is now ”largely restricted to providing the voters’ register, as the Commission cannot extend unlimited support from its lean federal budget.”
While discussing the future of Local Government elections, Yakubu referred to the Electoral Act 2022, which governs the conduct of national, Area Council, and Local Government elections nationwide.
He appealed to FOSIECOM to ”take proactive measures to protect the integrity and credibility of elections.”
Yakubu concluded by urging SIECs to ”address legal and financial constraints while prioritizing their independence and commitment to conducting credible elections.”
”There are no shortcuts to fulfilling your responsibilities,” he added, noting that there should be concerted efforts to improve the electoral process at the local level.
