US chip giant, Intel, on Tuesday unveiled technologies it claimed would lead the artificial intelligence revolution, striking a defiant tone in the face of fierce competition from competitors Nvidia, AMD, and Qualcomm.
At the annual COMPUTEX tech trade conference in Taiwan, Intel CEO, Pat Gelsinger, announced the Xeon 6 CPU, two days after rival Nvidia and one day after Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) unveiled their next-generation AI chips.
According to Gelsinger, the company’s new CPU would outperform its predecessor for high-density applications in data centres in terms of performance and power efficiency. Additionally, Intel revealed that the cost of its Gaudi 2 and Gaudi 3 AI accelerators is less than that of its competitors’ chips.
It also coincides with the release of Intel’s 5th generation Intel Xeon processors for use in data centres, which was announced six months ago, and the Gaudi 3 processor, which was announced two months ago, for training and deploying AI models.
“Customers are looking for high-performance, cost-effective gen AI training and inferencing solutions. And they’ve started to turn to alternatives like Gaudi. They want a choice.
“They want open software and hardware solutions and time to market solutions at dramatically lower TCO [total cost of ownership],” Gelsinger said.
The optimal balance of performance, energy efficiency, and cost, according to Gelsinger, is offered by Intel’s most recent hardware.
He stated that a third of competitors’ prices are comparable to Intel’s Gaudi systems, which are utilised for sophisticated AI tasks including model training.
