The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to individuals flouting building regulations, threatening severe consequences for those violating the rules.
Dr. Olajide Babatunde, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on EGIS and Urban Planning, delivered the government’s message during a routine inspection in Ikoyi, accompanied by the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Arc Gbolahan Oki.
Addressing journalists after sealing off several buildings that were found to contravene state building regulations, Dr Babatunde emphasized that construction without proper authorization from LASBCA would not be tolerated.
He announced the cancellation of all authorizations issued by the agency and mandated that all ongoing construction projects must cease until their permits are revalidated.
Dr Babatunde warned, “Anyone who goes to sites and starts construction without a revalidation would be brought to book… If there is no Green sticker on your properties and you are building, we will bring down your structure.”
Echoing the sentiment, Arc Gbolahan Oki stressed the importance of adhering to building regulations and obtaining necessary permits before construction. He urged developers to desist from fraudulent practices and assured violators would face consequences.
LASBCA’s crackdown extended to sealing off several properties in Ikoyi that were found to violate building regulations.
Oki urged community members to report any irregularities on construction sites to relevant government agencies, emphasizing the collective responsibility in preventing building collapses.
Earlier this year, LASBCA initiated the removal of shops and shanties built on roads and setbacks within the Lagos Island Business District.
According to the agency, the exercise aims to enhance easy access to high-rise buildings and offices, particularly during emergencies, and create link roads to alleviate traffic congestion.
The agency said removing shanties and illegal shops on access points leading to high-rise buildings is an ongoing effort aligned with the state’s commitment to achieving mega-city status.
