In a significant move to combat cervical cancer, Nigeria has announced the inclusion of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in the country’s Routine Immunization Schedule, effective from October 24, 2023.
The introduction of the HPV vaccine will commence in 16 states during Phase I, with the following states included: Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Enugu, FCT (Federal Capital Territory), and Jigawa.
The HPV vaccine protects against the Human Papillomavirus, a well-established cause of cervical cancer, a life-threatening disease that disproportionately affects women.
The vaccine’s addition to the immunization schedule is expected to significantly reduce cervical cancer’s prevalence in Nigeria.
Part of a statement released by the Ministry of Health on the new development read:
”It is important to emphasize that the HPV vaccines provided will be free, safe, and highly effective, reinforcing the government’s commitment to improving public health and ensuring accessibility to vital preventive measures.
”This development underscores the dedication of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency and the Nigerian government to bolster healthcare services and safeguard the well-being of the nation’s citizens.
”The inclusion of the HPV vaccine in the routine immunization schedule is a significant step forward in the fight against cervical cancer and the promotion of women’s health across Nigeria.”
