Nigerian contenders at the ongoing 2023 Niamey African Open Judo championships in the neighbouring Niger Republic have made the country proud.
Michael Agbo, on Saturday, June 24, won gold in the 66kg men’s category at the ongoing championships.
In the same category, National Sports Festival champion Kehinde Aremu settled for silver.
On her part, 32-year-old Franca Audu won bronze in the 52kg women’s category.
Nigeria, however, came fourth in the medal ranking behind Ivory Coast whose contenders were third on the log.
Senegal topped the medal log followed closely by Cameroon whose contenders came second.
Thirteen referees, including four international, seven continental, and two national, are participating in the competition.
Before the commencement of the championship, a refresher session was held for the referees and coaches, which took place at the Palais des Sports in Niamey on June 21, 2023.
African Judo Union Refereeing Director Khaled Anwar conducted the session alongside his team.
