Following the disagreements within the All Progressives Congress (APC) concerning the Senate Presidency, there are indications that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may take advantage of the situation to field a candidate.

The APC leadership had endorsed a former Akwa Ibom state governor, Senator Godswill Akpabio, for the position, but the decision has polarised the party.

Aspirants like Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and former governor of Zamfara state, Abdulaziz Yari, have hinted about contesting for the position despite the party’s stance.

Sources in the PDP said the party may take advantage of the situation in the ruling party to field its candidate.

A source in the main opposition party said:

”We are waiting in the wings to see what happens if the ruling party cannot get their acts right; we have the right to field a candidate.

”If the president-elect of a country decides who becomes the Senate president, how will the Senate regulate the presidency? That is not how to practice democracy; we will not allow it.

”The Senate President, who is supposed to lead the Senate that will checkmate the presidency, must be chosen by the senators, not the president-elect.”

The PDP leadership has been quiet regarding the race for the Senate Presidency.

Political watchers say the silence of the main opposition party should be a source of worry for the APC.

Another source in the APC said:

”The APC should be wary of the PDP. Whether we like it or not, they have the numbers and can cause an upset.

”We should unite for the sake of not losing the seat. Any mistake on our part will spell doom for us, and we can’t afford to start this new dispensation like that.”
