Victor Boniface, a Super Eagles striker, has been named the Bundesliga’s Rookie Player for the month of September. Boniface won the award on Friday on the club’s social media account X.
This is Boniface’s second Rookie Player award of the season after he won it in August. Boniface, 22, beat a strong field of nominees such as Xavi Simone, Xavi Hernández, and Maximilian Behier of Hoffenheim to win the award.
Boniface previously had two goals and about three assists played in four Bundesliga games earlier in September.
He made his international debut for Nigeria in September, scoring a goal and providing an assist in a 6-0 win over São Tome and Principe in an AFCON qualifier.
In a brilliant follow-up, Boniface scored his first goal for the Eagles in their 2-2 International friendly against Saudi Arabia at the Estadio da Luz in Portugal. Boniface has been in imperturbable form since joining Bayer Leverkusen from St-Gillaise in the summer, scoring nine goals and providing three assists in his first ten Bundesliga games.
Last month, Boniface made history by becoming the first Nigerian player to win the Rookie of the Month award and the Player of the Month in the same month, the first time, which also happened with Erling Haaland in 2020.
