Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has accused certain forces of undermining the efforts of the Bola Tinubu administration to stabilise the economy.
He attributed the current food crisis in the country to smugglers and politicians who failed to gain power through the ballot box.
Speaking at the Public Wealth Management Conference in Abuja, Shettima stated that some individuals were desperate to see the country fall apart.
He highlighted instances of illegal smuggling of maise and called for unity to address these challenges.
Shettima expressed disappointment at citizens engaging in political disputes instead of prioritising governance.
He mentioned that practitioners of violence are advocating for Nigeria to go the way of Venezuela or Lebanon.
Despite the challenges, he expressed optimism that Nigeria is resilient and will overcome the storm.
To stabilise the economy, Shettima disclosed that the federal government aims to raise $10 billion by optimising public assets.
”The goal is to stabilise the national currency and double the country’s GDP growth rate over the next eight years. The restructured Ministry of Finance Incorporated will lead the overseeing of these assets,” he stated.
The food crisis in Nigeria has led to a significant increase in food prices, affecting households’ purchasing power.
Recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows a surge in food inflation, prompting the government to address the challenges and implement measures for economic stability.
