Former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, and his wife Beatrice were on Friday, May 5, 2023, sentenced to prison by a UK court for their involvement in the organ harvesting charges brought against them.
While the Enugu-born politician was jailed for nine years and eight months, his wife was handed four years and six months sentence in prison.
Here are the five primary reasons why the couple were imprisoned, according to the judge:
1). David Nwamini, the would-be kidney donor in the organ trafficking case was approached with an opportunity to work in the UK . The boy was unaware that he would donate his kidney. He was also unaware of the risks involved or its long-term health effects on him.
2). The doctor acting as the middleman had done the same thing to someone else, and the person did not receive the needed long-term care.
3). They offered to pay the boy N3.5 million, but they had no intentions of paying the boy or helping him with his long-term care after donating his kidney.
4). After the UK doctors refused the surgery, they took the boy to Nigeria for a forced operation. They maltreated him and seized his passport, refusing him his fundamental rights. He had no choice but to run away.
5). After they were caught and arrested for violating the modern slavery act in the UK, regarding the organ harvesting conspiracy with Dr Obinna Obeta, the Ekweremadus continued hunting for another victim.
