Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized the significance of parliamentary diplomacy in promoting global unity and peace during his address at the 148th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Related Meetings held in Geneva, Switzerland, on Sunday.
Akpabio underscored the critical role of parliamentary diplomacy in fostering peace worldwide and resolving conflicts.
He called for further progress in this diplomatic approach and acknowledged the Nigerian parliament’s efforts in exploring and achieving success through parliamentary diplomacy.
Beyond its legislative functions, Akpabio highlighted the role of the Nigerian parliament in mediating conflicts between non-governmental organizations and the government and disputes involving labour unions.
He shared the progress and initiatives undertaken by the 10th National Assembly under his leadership, emphasizing the importance of collective action in shaping a better future amid global challenges.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s diverse cultural heritage and the challenges of polarization, Akpabio stressed the government’s commitment, supported by parliament, to strengthen peace, collaboration, and unity.
He cited legislative milestones such as the passage of the “Not Too Young to Run” Bill in 2018, aimed at expanding youth and women’s participation in governance.
Acknowledging Nigeria’s contributions to international peace and security through peacekeeping missions, Akpabio highlighted the role of the Nigerian parliament in conflict prevention and resolution, regional parliamentary forums, and addressing cross-border issues related to refugees and arms smuggling.
Akpabio emphasized the importance of parliamentary friendship groups in strengthening ties between countries’ parliaments and promoting gender mainstreaming, democracy, and good governance.
He advocated for preventive diplomacy as a powerful tool for conflict prevention and peaceful mediation, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to combating insecurity by curbing the circulation of illicit arms in West Africa.
Highlighting the Nigerian parliament’s achievements in upholding international commitments, promoting peace-building, and holding the government accountable, Akpabio called for increased progress in parliamentary diplomacy and peace-building capacity across all sovereign states.
He urged unity and cooperation in reshaping the world for a brighter, more equitable future.
