Mr Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.), has underscored the crucial role of bridging the energy access gap in driving Nigeria’s economic prosperity.
Delivering a keynote address at the 2024 Society of Petroleum Engineers Oloibiri Lecture Series and Energy Forum (SPE OLEF) in Abuja, Kyari emphasized NNPC Ltd.’s commitment to developing the necessary infrastructure to deliver oil and gas, thereby fueling economic growth across the nation.
He highlighted the company’s dedication to investing in gas infrastructure, focusing on supplying gas to the domestic market to enhance economic prosperity.
“We are committed to developing gas infrastructure across the country,” Kyari affirmed, noting that the commitment extends beyond mere compliance with statutory requirements to ensuring energy security and prosperity for all Nigerians.
He outlined NNPC Ltd.’s ambitious goal of supplying at least 8 billion cubic meters of gas to the domestic market.
The NNPC chief also discussed the company’s efforts to expand gas supply to the international market through projects like the NLNG Train 7 and initiatives aimed at kick-starting Train 8 and various floating LNG projects.
Kyari urged stakeholders and investors to leverage Nigeria’s abundant gas resources for economic prosperity, highlighting the need to bridge access gaps in electricity and clean cooking fuel.
He reassured stakeholders of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to the gas revolution and called for support in achieving these objectives.
Engr. Salahuddeen Tahir, Chairperson of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria Council, echoed Kyari’s sentiments, emphasizing the critical role of energy in modern society and the need for a diversified and sustainable energy transportation system to mitigate climate change and enhance energy security.
The SPE OLEF, now in its 24th edition, is dedicated to contributing to Nigeria’s oil and gas industry policy development, commemorating the first commercial oil discovery in Nigeria in 1956.
This year’s forum continues to play a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s energy landscape.
In a related development, Mrs Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, the Executive Vice President of NNPC Ltd for Upstream operations, reiterated the company’s dedication to harnessing Nigeria’s abundant gas resources to drive industrialization and foster economic growth.
Speaking during a Panel Session at the 2024 CERAWeek Conference in Houston, United States, Eyesan emphasized Nigeria’s significant gas reserves, exceeding 200 trillion cubic feet (TCF), which she noted presents vast opportunities for the nation’s development.
