The Nigerian government has reacted to criticisms of its large delegation to the COP28 Summit in Dubai.
Minister of Information Mohammed Idris said the government only sponsored 422 people instead of the over 1,000 reported in the media.
Nigeria’s presence at the ongoing Climate Summit in Dubai, COP-28, has sparked outrage back home over the size of the country’s delegation.
With over 70,000 global participants, Nigeria’s delegation stands out, comprising various government officials, private sector representatives, civil society leaders, and more.
Minister Idris said Nigeria’s delegation of 422 individuals, funded by the Federal Government, includes members from various sectors:
- National Council on Climate Change: 32
- Federal Ministry of Environment: 34
- All Ministries: 167
- Presidency: 67
- Office of the Vice President: 9
- National Assembly: 40
- Federal Parastatals/Agencies: 73
”This robust representation underlines Nigeria’s substantial stake in climate action, rooted in its status as Africa’s largest economy and most populous nation.
”The delegation’s comprehensive composition highlights a united effort across governmental branches, private enterprises, civil society, and marginalized communities.
”Nigeria’s active engagement at COP-28 underscores its commitment to addressing climate challenges and playing a pivotal role in global efforts to combat climate change,” he said in a statement.
