A federal high court in Abuja has ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to grant the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, access to the medical doctors of his choice.
Binta Nyako, the presiding judge, gave the ruling on Thursday, the Cable newspaper is reporting.
Mr Kanu had asked the court to compel the DSS to allow him access to his medical doctor.
Last month Mr Kanu in a letter through his lawyer, Mike Ezhecohme, informed the service that his known medical doctor, Cfine Okorochukwu, is out of the country, and requested a formal engagement with his new doctor.
Mr Kanu also confirmed his new doctors Uche Ukwuije and David Ukoha, requesting that they be allowed access to our client, for a formal engagement meeting.
He confirmed that the doctors would be available for a visit on Tuesday, the 20″ of June 2023 at 10:00 am.
Mr Kanu is currently facing treason charges in the Federal High Court in Abuja.
After the Nigerian government repatriated him from Kenya in 2021—a move his advocates referred to as a “abduction”—he is currently being kept in the custody of the State Security Service (SSS) at its Abuja headquarters.
Mr Kanu, who was granted bail in 2017 after serving nearly 19 months in SSS prison, was alleged to have disregarded all of the bail requirements set down by the Federal High Court, prompting the request for bail revocation from the office of the then-attorney general, Abubakar Malami.
