Queen Esther Iroanusi, a development expert, lamented that the 9th Nigerian Senate would be winding down on Thursday, June 8, without addressing significant issues in the polity.
According to her, many critical issues for which committees were set up and asked to probe will not be addressed.
“Some committees never submitted reports. And for the few that did, reports were not considered. Worst still, some lawmakers who head these committees will not return,” she noted.
She went on to list eight main issues that have remained unresolved.
They include:
1) Court invasion by the DSS (Omoyele Sowore’s arrest)
2) Incessant jailbreaks across the country
3) Tariff hike for Cable TV
4) The recent probe of unauthorised spending by the Niger Delta Development Commission
5) N400 billion abandoned projects with funds domiciled in Keystone Bank
6) The numerous queries on Ministries, Departments and Agencies (including the National Assembly) by the Auditor-General.
7) The probe of Senator Elisha Abbo, who assaulted a woman in 2019
8) The 774,000 jobs for youth in 774 local government areas of the country
The 9th Senate was led by Senator Ahmad Lawan from Yobe state while Ovie Omo-Agege from Delta state deputized him.
