A former governor of Ogun, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has asked the Dapo Abiodun-led government to suspend all his pension and allowances as a former state governor.
Otunba Daniel said he took the decision after he was elected into the Nigerian Senate.
Daniel, 67, was elected to serve as Senator for Ogun East in the 2023 general elections.
He said the decision was made in good conscience, with moral principles and guiding ethics.
His words:
”After my inauguration at the Senate, I wrote H.E Prince Dapo Abiodun on June 14, 2023, to notify him of my decision to have the monthly payment of N676,376.95 being gross payment for my pension and allowances as former governor of the Ogun State suspended immediately.
”This decision, I made, in good conscience, moral principles and guiding ethics. It is also important to state that this is the only payment and package I get from the state government as a former governor.”
Yekinni Kolawole, a healthy and safety officer, commended Senator Daniel for his move.
”Well done, distinguished Senator OGD. All Ex-Governors in the red chamber should follow your exemplary leadership. Ogun East senatorial district is now in good hands,” he wrote on Twitter.
An author, Mike Adenubi Olalekan, wrote:
”You have shown a good example for other public office holders to emulate.”
Otunba Daniel’s action comes when there are rumours that he is at loggerheads with the governor.
Governor Abiodun had also been in a running battle with one of the former governors of the state, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.
The governor, however, has the backing of another former governor of the state, Otunba Segun Osoba.
