At the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, Zimbabwean authorities have detained David Hundeyin, a famous Nigerian journalist.
Hundeyin, 33, founded West Africa Weekly, a Substack newsletter.
He is known for his consistent earth-shattering expose of Nigeria’s corrupt elites and those in positions of authority.
He raised the alarm on Twitter, noting that he was detained for using a travel document from a country with a visa-free relationship with Zimbabwe.
However, the authorities in the southern African country are wary of the fact that his nationality is still Nigerian.
He added that he was locked up alongside a Ugandan national with the same issue.
His words:
”I landed in Zimbabwe earlier today, and I have been detained at Harare Airport inside a smelly, locked room for nearly 7 hours.
”They said that despite using the travel document of a country with a visa-free relationship, my nationality is still Nigerian; thus, I need a visa.
”I was processed for removal from their country and locked in a tiny room, but I have heard nothing from anyone for several hours.
”Alongside a lady from Uganda (also a visa-free country), I have been locked in a room with no windows or toilet, plus a bottle of pee on the floor.
”No one appears to be in charge of anything, and even though my return flight to Addis has been rescheduled for tonight, I am still locked in this room, and I risk missing my flight.
”They appear to have forgotten that they have people in detention here.”
Followers of Hundeyin have responded massively by retweeting his tweets and tagging Zimbabwean government officials.
Some also suggest that the Nigerian government may have had a hand in his ordeal due to his publications against President Bola Tinubu.
Hundeyin had investigated Tinubu and revealed in a report that the Nigerian leader was once a member of a drug cartel in the United States of America.
Opposition parties have since echoed Hundeyin’s claims at the presidential election petition tribunal, asking for Tinubu’s disqualification as a candidate and outright removal as the country’s leader.
