FG Power Generation Companies (Gencos) have grown the national grid’s power production capacity from 13,000 megawatts (Mw) recorded some years ago to around 14,000 MW, according to the APGC’s Executive Secretary, Dr Joy Ogaji.
Speaking to Newsmen on the sidelines of the Association of Petroleum and Gas Exploitation (APGC) 2023 Annual International Strategic Conference last week Thursday, Dr Ogaji expressed that the boost in electricity generation power on the national grid became possible by the addition of the $1.3 billion Zungeru (700MW) hydroelectric production plant during the 2nd quarter of the year in Niger state.
“The national grid’s installed power generation capacity now stands at approximately 14,000 MW,” she said.
In February, the Federal Government declared Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited as the successful tenderer for the concession to operate the power plant, offering a $700 million annual fee for a 30-year period.
Despite Ojagi’s claim of a peak power generation of 14,000 MW, an investigation conducted by the NSE revealed that the most recent peak power generation on the grid on Saturday amounted to 4,803,60 MW. According to experienced engineers, Nigeria needs a minimum of 30,000 MW to meet sufficient supply.
