The Federal Government has announced that it will allocate a total of N5 million to 45 AI-focused startups and researchers, with the aim of promoting the integration of Artificial Intelligence into the economy.
In a post on its website, the Ministry said that the AI Research Scheme would provide a platform for these startups and researchers to explore advanced possibilities to improve their work and provide an efficient AI ecosystem in Nigeria.
The Minister further stated that the Scheme would help to strengthen the efforts of the Ministry in driving innovation, increasing productivity in key sectors, and positioning Nigeria as a world leader in the use of AI technology.
From the information provided on the scheme’s website, it appears that the areas to be evaluated are agriculture, education and workforce, finance, governance, healthcare, utility, and sustainability.
According to the Ministry, the applicants must be part of a consortium composed of start-ups or technology companies, Nigerian university researchers, or foreign researchers to be eligible for the grant. (amongst other eligibility criteria)
The Ministry said that the application process will begin on the 13th of October 2023 and end on the 15th of November 2023. It added that all applications are to be submitted via the dedicated online channel provided by the Ministry.
In addition, the Ministry said that the proposals would be evaluated by an expert panel of artificial intelligence (AI) specialists. Shortlisted applicants will receive an email and will be invited to an interview.
