“Nigerians don’t really understand hip-hop or its artists,” popular rapper Odumodublvck said in an interview with CTRL Room.
“When I was a struggling rapper, organisers wouldn’t even give me a seat at award events,” Ogubulu recalled how he once turned down a team member’s suggestion to join forces with Afrobeats superstar Davido in order to achieve success.
“In 2019, they told me to come to Lagos to meet Davido, but I said, ‘What would he do for me?’ Even if he took me to America, put me on stage, and let me rap, his fans wouldn’t understand because they’re afro-beat fans.” Ogubulu said he preferred UK grime artists whose genre suited his vision.
The rapper said that he was really happy when Wizkid said that hip-hop was dead, so he decided to follow the same path. He said that he didn’t need Davido to get to where he wanted to be, so he followed the people who fit his vision.
That’s how they ended up working together and now they’re number one in the UK. He also said that they don’t respect the hip-hop scene in Nigeria, but they respect us.
