Renowned novelist Chimamanda Adichie has disclosed that she supported Peter Obi for the presidential election not because he is an Igbo man.
In an open letter to the government of the United States, the Nigerian writer urged President Biden not to congratulate president-elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu due to anomalies during the election.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) had accused Adichie of backing Obi because he is an Igbo man, citing several videos and other publications online where she had made the comment.

However, Adichie explained that she pledged her support for Obi for taking Anambra to the next level in terms of education and other basic things during an interview on Arise TV on April 12, 2023.
She said the former Anambra governor paid homage to her parents because her father was the first professor of statistics in Nigeria and her mother was the first female retired registrar of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
In her words: “I did not support Peter Obi because he’s Igbo as I am. My support for Peter Obi is rooted in his antecedents and my faith in his ability. The idea of ethnicity politicized by a political party is a way of deflecting, and quite unfortunate”
