The Katsina government has successfully registered approximately 40,000 Women Affinity Groups (WAGs), establishing a comprehensive database to enhance outreach and empowerment efforts.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Zainab Musawa, highlighted this accomplishment during a roundtable discussion held in Katsina as part of the 2024 International Women’s Day celebrations.
Stating the significance of this initiative, Musawa explained that the registration aimed to empower women effectively, aligning with the objectives of the Nigeria For Women Project.
Supported by the World Bank, this project focuses on fostering economic independence and social inclusion for women across various sectors.
Musawa further announced the establishment and inauguration of a multi-sectoral committee, marking a pivotal milestone in realizing the project’s goals.
The commissioner expressed the government’s commitment to inclusive economic empowerment and unlocking the full potential of women in the state, with a specific focus on investing in education as a catalyst for their economic advancement.
During the roundtable, participants from the Adolescent and Sexual Reproductive Health and Life Skills (Safe Space) program shared insights into the positive impact of the initiative. Nana Mas’ud-Iyatwa, representing Rimi local government, urged the Governor’s wife Hajiya Zulaihat Radda to facilitate the establishment of Sexual Assault Referral Centers (SARCs) across the state, emphasizing the importance of immediate response to combat gender-based violence.
Aisha Muhammad-Hayat from Sandamu local government also took the opportunity to commend Save the Children for its continuous support and educational initiatives.
