The Lagos State Government has announced new mandatory requirements for all event planners and club operators to involve state traffic managers in their event planning processes.
This move aims to ensure smoother traffic flow and enhance public safety during public functions.
The decision was revealed during a special stakeholders’ meeting attended by key government officials and industry representatives, including the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, and the Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola.
The meeting stressed the need to address the persistent traffic challenges caused by events, clubs, and gatherings across the state.
Mr Giwa highlighted the detrimental impact of traffic congestion on both time and finances for road users, emphasizing the urgent need for collaborative measures to mitigate these issues.
He stressed the importance of effective planning and management by event centre owners to alleviate traffic gridlock and minimize disruptions to motorists and residents.
The stakeholders discussed various strategies to improve traffic management, including better parking systems and coordination with the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA). It was proposed that event management teams would share their traffic plans with LASTMA to facilitate smoother traffic flow during public events.
Lanre Mojola reiterated the government’s commitment to reducing traffic congestion and enhancing road safety through collaborative efforts with event centre operators. He emphasized the importance of stakeholder engagement to ensure the success of these initiatives.
In response to concerns about the conduct of LASTMA officials, plans were announced to launch an official complaints website and a toll-free hotline for the public to report any misconduct. This initiative aims to enhance communication and accountability within the organization.3
The participants praised the government’s initiative and expressed their willingness to cooperate in achieving the common goal of improving traffic management. Adetola Akinola, President of the Association of Event Center Owners, lauded the inclusive approach taken by the government and pledged support for the proposed measures.
